Ikea Myrheden Hack

Ikea MYRHEDEN Hack

Last week I was strolling through Ikea and I noticed a wire memo board with clips called the MYRHEDEN. It caught my eye but there was something about it that was just lacking. Maybe it was that it was too plain or maybe it was the brass that was throwing me off.  I just didn’t like it as is but I saw the potential in it and knew immediately how I could turn it into a beautiful wall decor piece that would match the rest of my decor. Here is my take on the Ikea MYRHEDEN Hack. I’d like to think that I took it from plain Jane brass wire to farmhouse chic.

You’ll need a few supplies for this hack.  A full list of materials and tools can be found below. This post contains affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will make a commission if you click-through and make a purchase.

Directions

Step 1

Cut your plywood board to 20″ x 27″  This will be the backing that you will attach the MYRHEDEN to.Ikea myreheden hack - farmhouse

Step 2

Paint the plywood board white.  I chose to use a flat white spray paint since spraying always makes life easier.  However, any white paint will do.

Step 3

If you want to change the color of the MYRHEDEN, spray it the color of your choice.  I went with soft iron spray paint by rustoleum. They have a great variety of colors.  I think it would look awesome in a copper or oil rubbed bronze finish too!

Step 4

Cut the 1×2 trim that will make the frame for the plywood.  You’ll need two pieces that are 22″ and 2 pieces that are 28.5″.

Step 5

Stain the trim the color of your choice.  I’m a bit obsessed with Minwax early american stain so I of course had to use it on this project too.

Step 6

Attach the wood trim to the plywood board.  Be sure to use wood glue on this step but not too much.  Just a small bead is perfect.  Apply the wood glue to the edges of the plywood and then attach the 1×2 trim pieces with an air nailer and brad nails.

Step 7

Arrange the MYRHEDEN on the backing so that there is an even border around each of the edges.  Then, mark where the screw holes will go.  Use a drill to insert two screws that the Myreheden will hang from.  Make sure that the heads of the screws stick out enough to attach the MYRHEDEN.

Step 8

Attach a hanger so that you can hang the piece on your wall.  There are a variety of methods that can be used for this.  My method of choice is to use my router an a keyhole bit.  If you don’t have a router, a simple picture hanging kit would be fine as long as it can support the total weight.

Step 9

Hang the MYRHEDEN on the board and then hang it on your wall and decorate with photos, postcards or whatever you want!

It turned out exactly as I had imagined.  I hung it in my guest room/office above the desk that I built for season 6 of the instagram builders challenge.  I’ll be putting either shelves or a pegboard next to it so that I can have a place to organize my craft items.  I’ll share that on a later post.  Also, I didn’t like the clips that came with the piece from Ikea so I used mini clothes pins instead.  I think it looks much nicer this way.

Here are some final shots.

  1. This came out great – I’ve walked by that item at Ikea and never considered it would fit in our house. A few modifications and it would!
