Why add coffee to brownies
Well, why not? For real though, did you know that coffee actually enhances the flavor of chocolate? Seriously, it will give your brownies a richer taste. Think about it, coffee is bitter and chocolate is sweet so it balances it out. They pair so well together. Trust me, you’re going to love this.

How to make Homemade Coffee Brownies
Don’t be intimidated by homemade brownies if you’ve only ever made boxed brownies. It’s seriously as simple as adding a few ingredients to a bowl and pouring them into a baking pan. Trust me, it’s super easy. You can’t screw this up.
Before you get started:
Chocolate to buy
Before we get into the step by step process, let me first say that you’ll want to be sure to use high quality chocolate for this recipe. You could totally substitute the chocolate chunks for chocolate chips, but a quality chocolate chunk is going to provide a richer taste. Also, be sure to buy semi-sweet chocolate. If the chocolate is sweet the brownies will be VERY sweet!
You could also use more chocolate chunks in place of the chocolate bar however the bar melts much better.
Instant coffee vs espresso powder
Espresso powder can be very hard to come by so I used espresso instant coffee for this recipe. You can find that at just about any grocery store. If you have espresso powder you could substitute the 2 tbsp of instant coffee for 2 tbsp of espresso powder.
Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You’ll also want to grease your 8×8 brownie pan. There are many methods to grease a baking pan to ensure that your brownies don’t stick to the pan. I use vegetable oil and rub it around the sides and bottom of the dish with a paper towel. You could also use a nonstick cooking spray, canola oil, coconut oil, butter or something else. Just keep in mind that what you use may add flavor to the brownies.
Microwave and melt the chocolate
Add 1 cup of the chocolate chunks and the chocolate bar to a microwave safe bowl. Break the chocolate bar into smaller pieces so that it melts faster. Add the stick of butter and microwave for 90 seconds.
Pause the microwave midway through to stir the chocolate mixture. After 90 seconds remove the bowl from the microwave and stir the mixture. If some of the chocolate has not melted put it back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or longer if needed.
Add ingredients
Add the flour, sugar, vanilla , cocoa powder and salt to the melted chocolate mixture. Whisk the mixture until well combined. Then let it cool for a minute or two.
Add eggs and instant coffee
After the mixture has cooled a bit, add the eggs and the espresso instant coffee. You’ll want to be sure that the mixture isn’t too hot or the eggs will begin to cook.
Fold in the remaining chocolate chunks
The last step is to add the remaining 1 cup of chocolate chunks.
Fold them into the mixture.
Pour the brownie batter into dish
Pour the brownie batter into the greased 8×8 glass dish.
Bake
Bake the brownies for about 40 minutes. You can use a toothpick to test if the brownies are fully cooked. Stick it down into the center of the brownies and if it comes out clean the brownies are fully cooked. You may need to try a few spots though because with the chocolate chunks there will be melted chocolate throughout the brownies.
If you like your brownies more gooey reduce the cooking time. If you like them drier extend the cooking time. Under baking brownies is typically the preference since most people like them gooey, but you do you! If you’re making brownies from scratch you can make them exactly how you like them.
Let cool and then cut
After the brownies have cooled you can cut and enjoy them!
