DIY Wooden Easter Bunnies – Adorable Handmade Decor

I’m back at it with another Easter craft tutorial for national craft month. I had some 3″ wooden balls left over from a recent project and wanted to try and make some cute DIY wooden bunnies for my Easter decor. In this tutorial I’ll walk you through how to make your own wooden bunnies using simple materials.

Owning the xTool M1 Ultra and P2 allows me to bring any idea that I can think of to life and I’m thrilled with how these little bunnies came out. But don’t worry, if you don’t own a laser cutting machine you could use a scroll saw or x-acto knife to cut the ears.

How to Make Wooden Easter Bunnies From Wood Balls

Supplies Needed

Tools Needed

Step 1 – Prepare the wooden balls

Start by sanding a flat surface on the 3″ ball to create a steady base for the bunny’s body. To create all of the flat surfaces I used my tabletop sander (you can see it in the background of the picture below)

Now that you have a flat base for the bunny. Place the 2″ ball where you want the head and trace around it with a pencil.

Now sand that spot until it is flat.

Do the same thing for the 1-1/4″ ball that will be used for the tail. The image below has the 3″ ball sitting on the sanded surface where the bunny’s head will be.

The 2″ and 1-1/4″ balls that I purchased already had a flat surface on one side so I did not need to sand those flat.

Next you’ll need to drill holes into the flat surfaces where the head and tail attach to the body. I used a 7/32″ bit which left a little wiggle room to fit the 3/16″ dowel into the holes.

Step 2 – Cut the ears

I choose to use my xTool P2 to cut the ears because obviously that’s the easiest and most precise way to do it. I could have used my less expensive xTool M1 Ultra but I already had the P2 set up from making my candle stick stands. Not everyone owns a laser cutting machine so an alternative solution would be to use a scroll saw or to cut them out on a soft wood with an x-acto knife.

Step 3 – Cut the dowels

I cut the 3/16″ dowel into about 1.5″ in length using my pull saw. You’ll need two of these so that you can attach both the head and the tail to the body.

Step 4 – Assemble the bunny

First dry fit the dowels into place and make sure that the length is good.

Then use super glue to attach the head and tail to the body.

I attached the ears with super glue and held them in place for about 30 seconds for the glue to dry.

Step 5 – Paint (optional)

You can leave the bunnies unfinished, stain them or paint them like I did.

I used DecoArt Americana paint in the colors Lilac Meadow and Mint Julep Green. The matte finish looks great on the bunnies.

I just adore these little wooden bunnies and had so much fun making them. I hope that you find this tutorial helpful and if you make your own please tag me on social @handmadeweekly. I’d love to see your creations!
