It may be nearly 100 degrees outside today but I don’t care, it’s the first day of October and it’s time to decorate for fall! My last DIY painted doormat held up extremely well so I just had to make a new one for the autumn season. I wanted something that was fall themed but could work all the way to Thanksgiving. Keep reading to find out how I made this DIY painted fall leaves doormat.
IKEA is my go to for plain doormats. You can’t beat the prices there and they have two sizes to choose from. The smaller one is the size of a typical doormat that you’d buy at most stores (1′-4″ x 2′-0″) and costs $4.99. The larger one is 2′-0″ x 2′-11″ and costs $9.99.
Here is a breakdown of the supplies that you will need for this project. This post contains affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will make a commission if you click through and make a purchase. Thanks for the support!

Directions – DIY Painted Fall Leaves Doormat
For this doormat I used the same process as my previous DIY painted doormat. If you’re looking for a step by step tutorial on how to attach your stencils and some suggestions for applying mod podge and paint check out this post.
You’ll need a Vinyl Cutting Machine to create the stencils. I have a Silhouette Cameo but any vinyl cutting machine will work. To start, I weeded out the leaves and placed them around the mat as evenly spaced as I could. There are 6 different leaf designs and with the large mat that I chose I ended up printing two 12″x12″ sheets of vinyl which gave me 28 leaves in total.

Paint Colors
I first painted over the stencils with Mod Podge and let the mat dry overnight since I started this late in the evening. That said, it doesn’t take that long to dry. Once it’s fully dry you can use a paint brush to apply the paint of your choice. I used a mixture of DecoArt and Anita’s Acrylic paint that I bought from Hobby Lobby.

Here is a breakdown of the colors that I used on my DIY fall leaf painted doormat.
- Tomato Red
- Primary Yellow
- Heritage Brick
- Bright Orange
- Olive Green
This fall doormat adds a nice touch of fall colors to my front porch. It compliments the mums and pumpkins perfectly. I Can’t make up my mind about the wreath though. This Neutral Fall Wreath was perfect for my fall decor last year but now I think I need a pop of color to match the rest of the porch. Thoughts? I’ll probably do an Instagram poll on this!

Oh my gosh this is sooo adorable! I want to make one, but don’t have a cutting machine. I am guessing it would be kinda hard to cut these out by hand. Great job!
