Upgrade Your Table Setting with These Easy DIY Napkin Rings

If you’re looking for a new project to use your laser cutting machine on, these DIY napkin rings are a super cute, easy and quick craft.

I designed them for Easter which is what inspired the pastel colors and flower shape. However I think they would be a fun addition to your table setting any time of year. They would also be a great DIY napkin ring for weddings.

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just want to add a touch of elegance to your everyday meals, these napkin rings are the perfect accessory. With just a few basic materials and a dash of creativity, you can transform ordinary napkins into beautiful works of art.

Size of Napkin Rings

Before we get into the details of how to make these laser cut napkin holders, let’s talk about dimensions. When it comes to napkin rings, the size plays an important role in the overall aesthetics. The right size can complement your table setting and enhance the look of your napkins. Plus you won’t want to make napkin rings that are way too big or small. They may not work with standard napkins.

A standard napkin ring measures around 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. This size works well for most napkins and is a safe choice if you’re unsure which size to go with. Note that this dimension is the inside diameter of the circular opening.

Remember, the size of your napkin rings should complement the size of your napkins. Experiment with different sizes to find the perfect fit for your table setting. My napkins aren’t thick so I went with a 1.5″ inner diameter opening.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Acrylic Napkin Rings Using a Laser Cutting Machine

If you’re looking for a modern and sleek option, consider making acrylic napkin rings using a laser cutting machine. This method allows for precise and intricate designs that are sure to impress. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

Materials

(4) 1/8″ Acrylic sheets

• Pastel purple
• Pastel cornflower blue
• Pastel pistachio green
• Pastel dusty rose pink

Glue – (optional if you are stacking the flowers)

Tools

You’ll need a Laser cutting machine for this project. I used the  xTool P2. You can use a different laser cutter but be sure that it can cut 1/8″ colored acrylic sheet or modify the material that you are using.

Step 1. Choose Your Design

Decide on the design you want for your acrylic napkin rings. You can create your own design or download our free template by entering your name and email address in the form below. Keep in mind the size and shape of your napkins when choosing the design. You’ll want a center opening between 1.5″ and 2″ in diameter.

Step 2. Prepare the Acrylic

Purchase acrylic sheets in the desired color and thickness. I wanted spring and Easter themed napkin rings so I went with an assortment of pastel acrylic from Houston Acrylic. Don’t forget that you can get a 10% discount if you use code handmadeweekly10 at checkout!

The sheets that I purchased came with a protective mask already applied but if your sheets are bare you may want to mask them first to ensure a better cut.

Step 3. Design and Settings

Use a design software compatible with your laser cutting machine to create your design. Adjust the settings of the laser cutting machine according to the thickness and type of acrylic you are using.

First thing you’ll need to do is upload your design. If you’re using XTool Creative space just upload it as an image.

The file is sized for a 1.5″ inner diameter circle so if you need to change that just scale the flower accordingly.

Then align the file on your acrylic sheet.

For material settings, I used 3mm white acrylic.

For the cut settings, I changed the processing type to cut, lowered power to 50% and lowered speed to 15 mm/s.

Step 4. Load the Acrylic

Place the acrylic sheet onto the laser cutting machine’s cutting bed. Ensure that it is securely in place before starting the cutting process.

If your acrylic is warped at all you may need to secure it down.

Step 5. Cutting the DIY Napkin Rings

Start the laser cutting process, following the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The laser will precisely cut the acrylic sheet according to your design.

You’ll end up with a flower and a circle. I’ll be saving the circles for future projects. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them but I’ll think up something creative! Let me know if you have any suggestions in the comments.

Step 6. Finishing Touches

Once the cutting process is complete, carefully remove the acrylic napkin rings from the machine. If needed, smooth out any rough edges using sandpaper or a file.

If desired, you can further customize the napkin rings by adding embellishments such as engraving, paint, glitter, or adhesive gems.

If your acrylic has a protective masking on it remove that to reveal the colored acrylic.

Optional: Layer the Flowers

The cool thing about this design is that you can utilize each of the flowers as individual napkin rings or layer them for a multi-colored look.

My favorite look is stacking 2 of them and staggering them to see the other flower below. Isn’t this so pretty?

You could also go all out and stack all 4 of them. I prefer the 2 look myself but this is still cool. If you decide to stack them you’ll just need to glue the pieces together or use double sided tape.

Step 7. Add the Napkins to the DIY Napkin Rings

Slide the napkins through the acrylic napkin rings, ensuring they are centered and secure. Arrange the napkin rings on your table setting and admire your stunning creation.

I love the spring colors. These DIY napkin rings will be a great addition to my Easter table.

Making acrylic napkin rings using a laser cutting machine may require some initial investment but the results are well worth it. This method allows for precise and intricate designs that will surely impress your guests.
