DIY Halloween Candle Hack: From Ordinary to Spooktacular!

Are you ready to get crafty this Halloween? If you’re looking for a simple and fun way to add a custom touch to your seasonal decor, this tutorial is for you! Today, we’ll be transforming an inexpensive store-bought jar candle with a wood lid into a spooky Halloween candle using the xTool M1 Ultra.

I bought a black candle at Home Goods for $3.99 which is such a great price for a nice candle like this. If you don’t already have a candle to work with, I highly recommend Home Goods, TJ Maxx or Marshalls if you have them in your area. You really can’t beat their prices.

For the design, I decided to repurpose a drawing that I did a few years ago that features a skeleton with a plant growing out of the skull. To make it spookier I added an old paper backdrop with a worn look.

How to transform a store bought candle into a Halloween candle

What You’ll Need:

• Black glass jar candle with a wooden lid
• xTool M1 Ultra (for laser engraving and vinyl cutting)
• Sticker paper
• Skeleton design for the sticker (PNG file) – download in step 2 below
• Spider web design for engraving (SVG file) – download in step 2 below
• Ruler for measuring candle
• Soft cloth for cleaning

Step 1: Measure your candle

Before you start printing or engraving you’ll want to measure your candle.

For the sticker, measure the glass jar height of the candle and measure the width that you want your sticker to be. Make sure to leave a little room for a border around the sticker.

For the top you’ll want to measure the diameter of the circle.

I used calipers to measure because I’m a nerd and own them but you can use a simple ruler if that’s all you have. ;)

Step 2: Download your designs

You can use whatever design you would like to transform your store bought candle. If you’re interested in the free design that I created just enter your name and email address in the form below and I’ll send it directly to your inbox!

Note that you will likely need to resize the images to match the size of your candle.

Step 3: Prepare Your Candle

Start by cleaning the glass surface of your candle to ensure the sticker paper will adhere smoothly. Wipe down the wooden lid as well, so it’s ready for engraving.

Step 4: Print and cut the sticker

For the front of the candle, we’ll be adding a skeleton sticker. I printed it using the xTool M1 Ultra’s printing module. Once printed, I cut the sticker using the fine tip blade module.

Step 5: Apply the Skeleton Sticker

Once your sticker is printed and cut you can place it onto the candle jar.

To help guide me as I attached the sticker, I first aligned it where I wanted it (before removing the sticker backing). Then I used a little piece of sticky paper to make a guide for the bottom of the sticker.

Step 6: Laser Engrave the Spider Web on the Wooden Lid

Next, it’s time to add a little eerie touch to the wooden lid. For this, we’ll laser engrave a spider web design using the xTool M1 Ultra. Upload your spider web SVG file and place the wooden lid inside the machine.

Set the engraving parameters according to the type of wood, and start the laser engraving process. In just a few minutes, you’ll have a beautifully detailed spider web engraved into the lid!

You can use any brand of laser cutting machine for this step. If you don’t have one, you could always hand draw a spider web on the lid with a pen or marker. Just be sure to test it on the bottom to make sure it doesn’t bleed.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once your candle is fully customized, wipe away any dust from the engraving, and your Halloween candle is ready to display! Place it on your mantle, table, or anywhere in your home that could use a spooky touch.
